If you're using Mermaid or PlantUML diagrams, you'll currently need to generate images out of them yourself first.
We recommend producing PNG images for line diagrams since it's easiest and the most reliable, but you can also produce SVGs and see what happens. (Results vary highly.)

One reason we do not support Mermaid diagrams in Leanpub currently is that we would need to generate them every time (which would slow down book generation) or implement some caching mechanism (which would add complexity).
Our thinking has been that people who are technical enough to produce Mermaid diagrams are technical enough to write a preprocessing script to generate them, or to ask AI to do it for them :)

Finally, in terms of Mermaid diagrams etc., to our knowledge standard Markdown (as defined in https://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/syntax) has never supported anything like this, and you've always needed to preprocess them into images first...
