Author Feedback on Converting from GitBook to Leanpub

Here is some helpful (and lightly edited) feedback we received from an author who came to Leanpub from Gitbook, and who wanted to help in case others might hit the same issues.

The author was using our Browser writing mode.

  • When pasting pages into the Write tab on Leanpub, you need to wait for it to say “saved” before navigating away, otherwise it might not have updated.

  • The page title is not included in the document like in GitBook, pages are essentially for organizational purposes only.

  • Code blocks are limited to 80 characters in PDF, after which it inserts a backslash and a new line instead of word-wrapping, which results in a broken code snippet; we need to manually trim code lines.

  • There is no json5 syntax highlighting, it will display as plaintext.

  • Anchors are applied globally and thus may need the page name in the anchor to prevent duplicates.

  • Leanpub doesn’t support: Images in tables, text emojis (:man_shrugging:) or HTML (<strong>)

  • Tables appear to be hardcoded to about 60% page width which compresses cells accordingly

  • Images sometimes did not work with spaces in the name (maybe space vs %20?). It's best to rename images to use hyphens or underscores.

  • When uploading images, you need to have the folder selected that they will go into, and you must upload one at a time. Because the sidebar is fixed in size, we cannot see the image name but you can hover over it to see the name.

We appreciate feedback like this, even - or especially - when it points out our limitations, as those are all great indications of how we can improve Leanpub for authors going forward.
