The short answer here is that there is only a free sample available for a book if the author has chosen to create one.
So, some books and have a free sample available, and others do not!
Finding a Sample Version of a Book
To see if there is a sample available, go to the landing page for the book and look for the sample button under the title, like in this example:
Why Do the Sample Books Come in Different Formats?
Some sample books provided by authors are available in PDF, EPUB and web (read in the browser) formats. Those are books written on Leanpub, using our Browser, GitHub, or Dropbox writing modes.
Other sample books provided through our Upload writing mode. When authors use our Upload writing mode, they produce their own ebook files using tools other than Leanpub. Authors using this writing mode may provide a PDF version, an EPUB version, or both.
Why Do the Sample Books Have Different Content from Each Other?
Every individual Leanpub author chooses what they want to include in their sample book, and they may change the contents any time.
So, how much free content is included in a sample book will vary from book to book, from author to author, and from time to time.
