Sometimes Leanpub authors are approached by people asking if they can translate the author's book, and publish and sell the translation in their own country.

When this happens, we sometimes get questions from authors like these:

"Does Leanpub have a process in place for handling these types of requests, such as translation rights agreements, licensing fees, royalties, and distribution rights?"

Here is an answer Peter wrote to an author who contacted us after being approached by a publisher who wanted to translate their book and sell the translation in the publisher's country:

"Thanks for checking in. You own all the rights to your work on Leanpub. If you’d like to pursue this opportunity, it’s entirely up to you.

For context, Leanpub does have a feature called TranslateAI, which can help create an AI-translated version of your book, but the translation only typically sells in meaningful amounts if the author actively promotes it in that language, sometimes with the help of a human translator who edits the translation and also helps market it, etc. So, the potential upside of an interested and competent third party publisher is possibly higher, if they are motivated, trustworthy, etc.

Beyond that, we don’t get involved in translation rights, licensing fees, royalties, or distribution arrangements, and we don’t offer opinions on particular third parties, payment terms, contract terms, etc."
