Please note that this article is for authors writing in Leanpub-Flavored Markdown. If you are using Markua, your book is automatically using UTF-8 character encoding. You can check to see which of these you are using here:

leanpub.com/YOUR_BOOK/manuscript_format

...making sure to replace "YOUR_BOOK" with your book's unique web address.

If you are writing your book in Leanpub-Flavored Markdown and you are seeing strange characters in your book, you may be able to fix the problem by changing the character encoding to be UTF-8.

To do this, go here:

leanpub.com/YOUR_BOOK/settings/generation_settings

...and tick the box next to "FORCE CHARACTER ENCODING TO BE UTF-8"

Then, click the blue "Update Book" button

The next time you create a Preview, the strange characters should be gone. If they are not, please contact Leanpub support at hello@leanpub.com.
