Leanpub has a Print-Ready PDF export feature so that you can produce the PDF file you'll need to get your book into print on Print-On-Demand platforms like Amazon KDP and Ingram.
Sometimes authors may want some manuscript content to be in the ebook version of their book, but not in the print version their book, or vice versa.
For example, a print book with lots of pictures can cost a lot of money to sell, and use a lot more paper and ink to produce; but an ebook can typically have any number of pictures in it without changing the cost (unless a download fee or some related charge is being added by the platform you're using).
Currently, we have no feature for including or excluding book manuscript content for the ebook vs. the Print-Ready PDF, sorry about that, but we may do something like that in the future.
How to Generate Different Versions of Your Book for Ebook vs Print
While we don't have a special feature to distinguish between generating ebook and Print-Ready PDF files from your book manuscript, there are a couple of approaches to doing this that we can suggest.
Note: These approaches generally assume your book is 100% completely written (otherwise you wouldn't be producing a print version yet).
Different Branches on GitHub
You could created different branches of your manuscript on GitHub, one for the ebook version, and one for the Print-Ready PDF version.
Then, on the Writing Mode page, you could switch to whichever branch you want, when you're generating an ebook version or a Print-Ready PDF version.
Note that the Print-Ready PDF will be generated from the Preview branch, not the Publish branch! This is so that you can create your Print-Ready PDF without affecting your published ebook that is for sale on Leanpub.
Different Book.txt Files
If you are writing in our GitHub or Dropbox writing modes, you could create different Book.txt files, one for your ebook version, and one for your Print-Ready PDF version.
(In these writing modes, in your book's manuscript
folder, you will have a file called Book.txt
, which lists all the text files in your manuscript
folder that you want to be included in your book, in the order that you want them to be included.)
You could name the ebook version Book-Ebook.txt
and the print version Book-Print.txt
.
Then, when you want to generate your book from either file, you would just delete -Ebook
or -Print
from the filename, changing it to Book.txt
, generate your new files, and then changing the filename back when you're done.
