We're exciting to announce we've launched OpenAI GPT-3 integration in our in-browser book writing mode!

If you're wondering what it's all about, here's an episode of the Lean Publishing podcast where Peter and Len discuss this feature, its importance, and how it might be used:

Basically, while you're writing, you can now use a powerful AI tool to make suggestions for what you may want to write next.

Typically the idea here is to use the suggestions the tool makes as just that, suggestions, giving you ideas for directions to go next.

In this article, we'll explain how to activate GPT-3 integration for your account (it's easy!), how to turn it on for each book, and some more details about this exciting new feature.

Activating GPT Integration in Your Leanpub Account

First, follow this link:

You can also get there by 1) clicking the menu at the top right of any Leanpub page, 2) clicking "Account" at the left, and 3) clicking "AI" in the Account menu:

That will take you to this page:

Please read the short text here, and then, to activate GPT integration for your account, just tick the box next to "GPT Text Completion Enabled" and then click "Save Settings":

Turn On GPT Integration for a Specific Book

Now that you've turned on GPT integration for your account, you can turn it on for specific books that you are the primary author of.

PLEASE NOTE that GPT integration only works for books in our In-Browser writing mode! Here's a tutorial that shows you how to create, write, and publish a book in the In-Browser writing mode:

To turn on GPT integration for an In-Browser writing mode book, you need to go to the AI page for the book here:

https://leanpub.com/YOUR_BOOK/settings/AI

...making sure to replace YOUR_BOOK with your book's unique web address.

You can also find a link to the AI page on your book's Overview page, under "Settings":

Here's what this page looks like:

Please read the short text here too, and then, to activate GPT integration for your book, tick the boxes next to "GPT Text Completion Enabled" and "Show GPT Text Completion Disclaimer in Verso Page?", and then click "Update Book":

If you only select "GPT Text Completion Enabled", we will automatically also select "Show GPT Text Completion Disclaimer in Verso Page?" for you. Opting in to the GPT integration for your book requires opting in to the verso page disclaimer. (For more information on why, please see the video embedded at the top of this page!)

Using the GPT Completion Feature While You're Writing

Using the GPT completion feature while writing is easy! First, go to the Write tab for your book:

If you've created a brand new book, you'll see some default content already in the editor:

For the purposes of this tutorial, we're just going to go ahead and delete all the chapter content:

Next, type a sentence on some topic; it can be the first line of a fantasy novel, the first line of a groundbreaking work of nonfiction - whatever!

Let's try the following sentence:

Lean Publishing is a great way to self-publish books chapter-by-chapter, getting feedback from excited early readers, and building your audience as you write.

Note that pretty quickly you'll see at the top right that your writing is auto-saved:

Next, type the return key a couple of times, like you would to start a new paragraph, and then, at the start of the line, type two exclamation points, like this:

!!

That's it! You don't need to do anything else!

Just wait a moment for the autosave to kick in, and our GPT integration will create some suggested text for you, based on what you've written:

Note that in this example, GPT-3 actually knew we were writing in Markdown, and automatically created a new chapter heading starting with a # sign:

Amazing!

You can now edit the suggested text to your liking, delete it entirely and try again, or keep experimenting by prompting more suggestions at the end of the suggested text.

Pricing

Currently our GTP integration is free for all Leanpub authors, but using the tool actually costs us money, so this won't last forever.

Eventually, there will be some form of charge for using our GPT integration as an add-on. (This will not require a Standard or Pro plan, according to our current thinking, anyway!)

However, when we actually start charging for the feature, we do plan to offer a discount to early adopters, so we hope you'll give it a try now!

OpenAI Terms of Service

If you'll pardon some red tape, to use this feature, you need to comply with OpenAI's Usage policies and Service Terms.

Please note that the requirement for users to comply with the terms of a third-party service provided by a platform is an ordinary thing!

Moving Forward

We're really excited to see how Leanpub authors use our GPT integration.

If you're up for it, we hope you'll share your experiences and experiments on our Authors Forum here:

OK, that's it!
