Leanpub is a self-publishing platform, and our Community Edition feature allows authors to make everything from one chapter to the entire book available for free.
This is a common practice in the "content creator" community: it's basically the author saying, "I'll give you something of quality for free, and in exchange you share your email address with me, so I can contact you and hopefully provide you with more information about myself and my work in the future."
