UPDATE FEBRUARY 3, 2023:

We’ve decided to streamline and rearrange the post-purchase page, leading to the downloads and custom invoice stuff being much higher up

Even though we had hardly any negative reader feedback from it, we decided three things:

  1. If enough authors think it’s bad or user-hostile, then we actually have a problem, even if readers don’t have a problem with it. (This is the “Adobe Digital Editions” problem: we’ve never once in 12 years heard from a reader who was having a problem with Adobe Digital Editions, but we’d heard from a number of authors. No, I don’t recall what the issue was in that case – I’ve blocked it out!)

  2. Since we made release notes opt out, not opt in, about a couple months ago, we should have the email settings a lot higher up. (Reader email address sharing is still opt in, since that would be really bad to be the other way around.)

  3. It could be that readers are, in fact, mildly annoyed – but not annoyed enough to email us. We don’t want our customers to be mildly annoyed; we want them to be really happy – both authors and readers!

Thanks again for the feedback (both to you and to the other authors who have raised it),
Peter

This answer used to be:

Thanks for your thoughtful feedback!

The short version of a reply is here:

http://help.leanpub.com/en/articles/5506883-why-are-the-downloads-so-far-down-on-the-post-purchase-page

There is also a recent discussion of this on our forum:

(Ironically, we've heard this feedback from authors, but we've basically never heard it from readers, even though we have many more readers than authors!)

From that forum post, the slightly longer answer is that the first two links are to where you get a receipt and to the Leanpub library, which also has the downloads available.

(So, you don't have to scroll down, you can just click a link to go to your library.)

For many of our readers, their first real introduction to Leanpub (and to other authors’ books, bundles, courses, etc.) is on the post-purchase page. We say at the top that the downloads are available further down the page, and we provide links etc.

Over time, we will be experimenting a lot with the post-purchase page (including possibly having different versions for existing and new customers), but for now the important thing to keep in mind is that those of us (such as authors, and people who are already familiar with the Leanpub Help Center) who are experienced Leanpub users are the power users of Leanpub, and are not representative of the typical new Leanpub reader.

Our first priority with the post-purchase page is to make it as good as possible for the new Leanpub reader. After that, we will probably enhance it to improve or streamline it for existing readers and authors.
