We're a Canadian merchant, and our credit card processing is done by PayPal Website Payments Pro.  Until recently, American Express was not supported by PayPal for Canadian merchants.  They recently made this change, but we have not integrated it into our site yet.

You can still use American Express cards on Leanpub, however.  Just click the PayPal tab and use your card on the PayPal site.
