The Leanpub Visual Editor is intended to be a visual typewriter, with only the features required to write a novel. When you’re writing a novel, the only formatting elements you really need are chapters, sections, subsections, paragraphs and italic.
So, we built a minimalist visual editor that has these features — and nothing else. In our visual editor, there is no support for images, links, lists, emoji, and a whole host of other “features”.
Every feature that we could add to the visual editor would increase its complexity, so we only added what is actually necessary to write a novel. Everything else, however trivial to add, was omitted.
See https://medium.com/@leanpub/the-leanpub-visual-editor-834c942e8c4e for the full reasoning.
Now, what to do if your book needs those features?
The right thing to do is to realize that it has outgrown the visual editor, and switch writing modes. Go to https://leanpub.com/YOURBOOK/writing_mode to do that.
If you really like writing in-browser, you can switch to our in-browser text editor. It has almost all the features, since you are literally typing Markua or Leanpub Flavoured Markdown.
However, we recommend using either Dropbox, GitHub or Bitbucket, and writing on your own computer. These modes have 100% of the features, and you can use either Markua or Leanpub Flavoured Markdown.
